How much sod do I need?

Here's how to measure you yard for sod. Grab a piece of paper and draw the areas to be sodded. Break up the areas into the shapes listed below. Measure the areas and write down your measurements. Now, calculate the sq.ft. of you areas based on the equations listed below and total.

Square or Rectangle

To figure the area of a square or rectangle, measure the Length & Width and multiply.
Length x Width = Area
12 x 24 = 288 sq.ft.

Right Triangle

A Right Triangle has one 90º corner. To figure the area of a right triangle, multiply the two sides that contact the right angle and divide by 2
Length x Width / 2 = Area
12 x 24 = 288 ÷ 2 = 144 sq.ft.

Circle, 1/2 Circle, 1/4 Circle

To figure the area of a circle, take the radius times the radius, then multiply by 3.14. Radius is a straight line from the center of a circle to the outside of the circle.
(Radius x Radius) x 3.14 = Area
6 x 6 = 36 x 3.14 = 113 sq.ft.
Half Circle divide by 2
6 x 6 = 36 x 3.14 = 113 / 2 = 56.5 sq.ft.
Quarter Circle divide by 4
6 x 6 = 36 x 3.14 = 113 / 4 = 28.25 sq.ft

Once you have your total sq. footage of your project space, you can now determine how much sod you need to purchase...

Small Rolls of Fescue or Bluegrass Sod

Each small roll = 9 sq. feet (1 sq. yard)
So... based on the example above take your total sq. feet and divide by 9 to find out how many small rolls of sod you need:
(Total Area) 601.5 ÷ 9 = 68.8
So a minimum of 69-70 small rolls.
** Small rolls of sod weigh 20-30 lbs.

Big Rolls of Fescue or Bluegrass Sod

Each big roll = 360 sq. feet (40 sq. yards)
So... based on the example above take your total sq. feet and divide by 360 to find out how many small rolls of sod you need:
(Total Area) 601.5 ÷ 360 = 1.67
So a minimum of 2 big rolls.
** Big rolls of sod weigh 500-600 lbs!

Due to the perishable nature and weight of sod, it is best to run short than to over order and have extra sod. We cannot take back sod once it has left our farms or been delivered at your house. Order 5% to 10% over depending on shapes and curves.
